Today marked the most-awaited first day of the Advanced Medical and Public Health Internship, as passionate interns from across the country arrived on Georgetown University's campus for a week packed with discovery, growth, and teamwork. We're thrilled to host this incredible group, and as these students embark on their unique journey exploring healthcare in Northern Nigeria, building critical medical skills, and forming lifelong friendships, we know this will be an unforgettable experience.

Once the interns had settled into their dorm rooms, Leadership Initiatives Executive Director Marshall Bailly officially welcomed them to the program and walked through expectations for the week ahead. The interns were then lucky to hear a keynote from our Nigerian physicians, Dr. Aminu, Dr. Aisha, and Dr. Zainab, who will be leading this week's teaching sessions on the four major diseases the interns will master: malaria, typhoid fever, acute respiratory infections (ARIs), and nutritional anemia. Following the doctors' introduction to healthcare in Nigeria, the interns met their Program Directors, Team Leads, and assigned groups before heading to dinner.

The Advanced Medical & Public Health Internship is a first-of-its-kind accelerated program that pairs motivated high school students with global medical leaders to train the next generation of doctors. Throughout the week, interns will grapple with complex medical issues and collaborate in small groups to develop extensive public health campaigns, which they'll advocate for before a panel of experts. The top presentations will be officially implemented in Nigeria. On the final day, the interns will put their skills to the test by diagnosing a real patient in Sub-Saharan Africa over a live video call, and Leadership Initiatives will cover the full cost of all patient treatments, giving these students a rare opportunity to make an immediate, life-saving impact on someone in need.

After dinner with their teams, the interns wrapped up the day with a Georgetown Exploration, visiting Georgetown Waterfront Park, shopping along M Street, stopping by local bakeries, and grabbing any last-minute essentials from CVS.
