This morning, interns started the day strong with learning about the requirements, steps, and information regarding their project proposals and final projects, which will take place on Friday. Interns got an introduction to public health, touching on the ways that the social determinants of health affect individuals’ access to healthcare. This discussion opened up for a deeper understanding of why Leadership Initiatives’ Medical & Public Health internship is so valuable, as they will be devising plans to prevent the four diseases of focus (Malaria, Nutritional Anemia, Typhoid Fever, and Acute Respiratory Tract Infections) from happening in the first place.

Interns saw a virtual tour of the partner hospital in Bauchi, New Life Hospital. In the video, they heard from the hospitals’ physicians, their specialties, and how they work to help the health of those in the Bauchi community.

Our wonderful Nigerian physicians, Dr. Aminu, Dr. Aisha, and Dr. Zaineb, provided presentations about the four prevalent diseases. Throughout these presentations, they were provided scenarios to help differentiate the symptoms of each disease. Our interns became mini public health professionals in diagnosing fictional patients from Dr. Aisha & Dr. Zaineb. They had the opportunity to ask and answer questions to the doctors in order to better understand how these diseases affect the community of Bauchi, Nigeria.

Following this discussion, interns had the opportunity to partake in an EMS Panel led by Mitch Kannry. Mitchell Kannry is a public safety leader with the District of Columbia Fire and EMS Department with more than 20 years of experience, specializing in fire prevention, emergency management, organizational leadership, and community risk reduction. Passionate about mentorship and developing future leaders, Mitchell enjoys sharing his experiences in leadership, teamwork, and emergency response to inspire students to pursue careers in public service and make a positive impact in their communities.
