The interns woke up to their first full morning at Georgetown, greeted by a delicious and varied breakfast spread to kickstart their day. With everything from cereals and bagels to spreads and juices, each student selected their meal to fuel up for the busy schedule ahead.

The day began with an in-depth case introduction led by Brandi Harden, who walked interns through the legal case they’ll be working on over the week. After the session with Brandi, interns were introduced to Heather Picknicky, her former partner and current attorney with the DC Public Defender’s Office, who shared insights from her experience in public defense.

Following the introductions, interns were divided into their congress groups, smaller teams that allowed for more focused collaboration. Within their groups, students had the opportunity to research criminal justice reform bills and begin working with their teammates on their advocacy campaign.

After lunch, the interns regrouped for an afternoon of learning and discussion. Brandi Harden returned to lead a powerful session on how race intersects with incarceration rates and criminal justice reform, prompting deep reflection and meaningful dialogue. The next lecture, led by Judge Adam Hunter, shifted focus to practical legal skills, guiding students through the techniques of direct and cross-examination.

Later in the day, energy levels rose with a moving panel discussion featuring Courtney Stewart and other individuals who were formerly incarcerated. Their stories added a powerful, personal layer to the day’s learning, leaving a lasting impression on the interns.

To close out the evening, students enjoyed a hot meal before heading out to explore Georgetown. With free time to browse shops, sample local treats, and unwind together, the group wrapped up the day on a high note. Back at the dorms, interns relaxed and reflected, preparing for the exciting experiences still to come.
