The Future of Medicine Just Landed at Georgetown: Day 1 of The Advanced Medical and Public Health Internship

Georgetown University’s campus is buzzing with energy today as we kick off the highly anticipated first day of the Advanced Medical & Public Health Internship. Bringing together a remarkable group of passionate students from across the nation, this week promises a unique experience of collaboration, clinical skill-building, and personal development. As we watch them step into the world of healthcare in Northern Nigeria, we cannot wait to see the impact it will have on them. 

Once the interns settled into their dorm rooms, Leadership Initiatives Executive Director Marshall Bailly officially welcomed them to the program and walked through expectations for the week ahead. The interns then heard a keynote from our physicians who traveled from Bauchi State, Nigeria: Dr. Aminu, Dr. Aisha, and Dr. Zainab. These three incredible doctors will be leading this week's teaching sessions on the four major diseases the interns will master: malaria, typhoid fever, acute respiratory infections (ARIs), and nutritional anemia. Following the doctors' introduction to healthcare in Nigeria, the interns met their Program Directors, Team Leads, and assigned groups before heading to dinner!

Designed to shape the next generation of healthcare professionals, the Advanced Medical & Public Health Internship is a first-of-its-kind program connecting motivated high school students with world-class medical leaders. Throughout the week, interns work together in teams to build sustainable public health campaigns. To close out the week, they will present their solutions to a panel of judges, and the top campaigns will be implemented in Bauchi. In addition, they will also step into the role of a physician and diagnose real patients in Bauchi, Nigeria, through a live video call. Because Leadership Initiatives covers the full cost of patients’ treatment, students aren’t just learning; they are actively saving lives.
