Rooted in Context, Driven by Compassion: Preparing Interns for Public Health Work in Bauchi

During a lecture on the socioecological landscape of Bauchi State, Dr. Zainab urged interns to ground their health education strategies in the everyday realities of the local community. For any public health intervention to succeed, it must reflect how people in Bauchi actually live, work, and interact. By immersing themselves in the unique medical and social context of Northern Nigeria, our interns gained the critical foundation needed to design realistic, sustainable health programs that truly resonate.

Dr. Zainab walked the team through various intervention models, ranging from individual, one-on-one counseling to indirect strategies that transform health behaviors by modifying the surrounding environment. Throughout the discussion, the interns recognized that cultural competence and a deep awareness of local behavioral nuances are not optional, they are essential to guiding community health choices effectively.

Building on these public health foundations, one of our Assistant Directors led a practical discussion on navigating patient relationships in Northern Nigeria. The session highlighted core cultural values, such as demonstrating deep respect for elders, slowing down the pace of care, and allowing ample time to learn about a patient’s unique background. These interpersonal principles set the stage perfectly for Dr. Zainab’s follow-up session on mastering clinical history-taking.

Dr. Zainab broke down the essential steps of taking a comprehensive medical history, emphasizing the importance of creating a welcoming environment, building rapport, collecting biodata, and systematically exploring a patient’s primary complaint alongside their past medical, family, and social histories. To put these lessons into immediate practice, the interns jumped into a lively simulation where Dr. Zainab roleplayed as a patient. 

The team actively conducted a full review and worked through a mock diagnosis, bringing the session to a close with bright smiles, enthusiastic applause, and plenty of confidence ahead of their upcoming diagnostic assessments this Friday!
