Learning by Doing: A Day of Medical and Scientific Exploration

Thursday's program gave the Middle School Jumpstart interns the opportunity to strengthen their scientific inquiry, emergency medicine skills, and teamwork through a series of hands-on healthcare and life science activities. As students rotated through interactive learning stations, they discovered how observation, precision, and collaboration play essential roles in both medicine and scientific research.
The morning began with a Medical Skills Lab where interns stepped into the role of healthcare professionals. Students practiced measuring blood pressure, learning how this simple but important assessment provides valuable information about a patient's overall health. They also explored orthopedic care by applying casts, gaining an appreciation for the techniques healthcare providers use to stabilize injuries and support healing. These activities emphasized careful attention to detail, effective communication, and the importance of following procedures to ensure quality patient care.

Throughout the day, interns also explored the connections between science, health, and the environment. During an owl pellet dissection, students examined the remains of an owl's meal to identify bones and better understand food webs, ecosystems, and animal adaptations. In the water sanitation activity, interns investigated the importance of clean water and explored methods used to improve water quality around the world. Through these experiences, students learned how environmental health and public health are closely connected and how scientific innovation can improve the well-being of entire communities.
By the end of the day, interns had developed a deeper appreciation for the wide range of careers within healthcare, environmental science, and biomedical research. Whether measuring vital signs, applying a cast, analyzing evidence from an owl pellet, or exploring water purification techniques, students continued building the curiosity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills that will support their work as future leaders, innovators, and global consultants throughout the remainder of the program.
