With a new day on the horizon, the interns arose from their second night in their new home. They ate their breakfast and got ready for the exciting day ahead. They started their day by asking questions regarding their cases with the Second Look Project, and having teamwork time to work on their case questions. Afterward, the interns were able to learn more about their respective clients and ask more personal, hands-on questions. They split into groups, with one group talking about their client. At the same time, the other half listened to a lecture from Ms. Naïké Savain, where they learned about advocacy surrounding large-scale changes to the DC criminal legal system.
After a delicious lunch, the interns head back to work! They began looking at their congressional advocacy work. During this time, they break into small groups of 3 to 4 people and research bills that they will present to state representatives later in the week, while the other half listened to a lecture from Professor Sarah Stiles about the Challenges in Accessible Representation.
The interns continued to learn more about the legal system as they listened to Eddie Ellis’ Legislative Advocacy and Policy Reform with The Campaign for Fair Sentencing for Youth lecture, and Kristin McGough’s Civil Rights Law and Social Justice presentation. They then had some group work time to continue working on their advocacy and case work. After wrapping up group work time, and the interns finally headed to dinner.
After dinner, the interns work on their congressional bill and then finally head to Georgetown exploration. With new treats bought, memories made, and friendships formed, the interns got ready for a new day.
