In today's technologically advanced world, medical and public health education often involves state-of-the-art simulations and virtual learning platforms. While these tools are invaluable in providing a foundational understanding of complex medical concepts, nothing compares to the invaluable lessons learned through hands-on experience.
As a part of our Skills Day on Wednesday, Advanced Medical and Public Health interns had the privilege of participating in an enlightening sheep heart dissection led by the esteemed instructor Tatyana Kliorina. This thrilling experience offered a comprehensive understanding of cardiac anatomy and function, enhancing the interns' knowledge and passion for their respective fields.
The heart, as a vital organ responsible for pumping life-sustaining blood throughout the body, is a wonder to behold. By examining the heart of a sheep, whose cardiovascular system closely resembles that of humans, the interns had an excellent opportunity to learn the nuances of cardiac anatomy. This practical experience allowed them to witness firsthand the correlation between theory and reality.

The sheep heart, being structurally similar to the human heart, served as an excellent teaching model. Before commencing the dissection, Instructor Tatyana familiarized the interns with the anatomy of the heart, explaining its various chambers, valves, and blood vessels. Armed with scalpels and forceps, the interns delicately dissect the sheep heart, revealing its internal structures step-by-step.
As they progressed through the dissection, the interns learned to differentiate between the atria and ventricles, traced the pathways of the coronary arteries, and observed the heart valves in action. This tactile experience allows them to gain insights into the heart's function, deepening their understanding of its role in maintaining overall health.
Beyond the physical aspects, the dissection also shed light on various cardiovascular conditions and pathologies that are crucial for medical and public health professionals to be familiar with. By observing the effects of certain conditions on the sheep heart, the interns gained insights into diagnosing and treating similar issues in human patients. Through his experience, intern Armaan Ali shared that fully understanding the anatomy of the heart before actually dissecting the structure enabled him to intentionally and successfully take apart the structure -- a method that will certainly aid him in his future medical work.

The sheep heart dissection not only serves as a lesson in anatomy but also fosters essential skills such as teamwork, precision, and problem-solving. As interns collaborate with their peers, they learn to appreciate the significance of effective communication and coordination, qualities crucial in any medical setting. Furthermore, the dissection experience sparks curiosity and inquiry, encouraging interns to ask questions and seek answers beyond the confines of the classroom. This thirst for knowledge will drive them to explore medical literature, attend seminars, and engage in thought-provoking discussions in the future.
Instructor Tatyana and the sheep heart dissection undoubtedly left an indelible mark on the advanced medical and public health interns. By immersing themselves in this invaluable hands-on experience, they transcended the boundaries of the classroom and connected with the essence of medicine and public health. Intern Anika Barnes shared that despite not wanting to pursue surgery as a career, learning about the many functions and structures of the heart sparked her passion for medicine, and she is confident that she will be able to use this knowledge in the future regardless of the path she chooses.
As they continue their journey in the medical field, they carry with them the knowledge, skills, and responsibility they gained during this enlightening session. Armed with a passion for healing and a commitment to bettering the lives of others, these aspiring medical professionals are now better equipped to make a significant impact in the world of healthcare.
