Leadership in Healthcare, Suturing, and Global Disease Burdens

This morning, the Med B interns started their day with Professor Sarah Stiles, a lecturer and expert on Leadership in Health Care. They heard about and worked through the elements of leadership necessary to success and considered the varying importance levels of prioritizing communication vs morale, and empathy vs efficiency, discussing and contemplating how to make those big decisions when we face health crises and even in the day-to-day lives of people working in health and wellness. 

Then, it was time to get hands-on again! This time furthering their education on suturing; a skill they learned the day before at Skills Day. The interns developed their grasp on the basics of stitching up wounds, an essential skill for any clinician. There were a lot of focused faces, steady hands, and a few proud moments as they mastered their first stitches. Some of them came out of the room feeling very confident in their wound care abilities, and some of them said they definitely want to practice a few more times before they apply their skills on real skin.

To wrap up the morning, Dr. Abigail Wilson spoke to the interns about the Global Disease Burden and the Social Determinants of Health. Dr. Wilson brings so much life to this topic. She shared with the interns how important it is to bring energy and passion into sustainable development work. They left the session feeling inspired to infuse a bit more joy and creativity into their own public health projects.
