This morning, the interns started their day with Dean Christopher King, of Georgetown University’s own School of Health. He shared his experiences with the interns, discussing all the intricacies of Public Health programming. Working through the various things public health officials consider when they design interventions, Mr. King opened their eyes to the sheer depth of work that goes into protecting the wellness of a community.

Dr. Ibrahim Gobir then came in to speak to the interns about the Global Disease Burden and the Social Determinants of Health. Dr. Gobir brings so much life to this topic. Not only is he a public health professional and former clinician, but he’s also a home farmer, former soccer player, and even a DJ! He splits his time between Nigeria and the United States, and shared with the interns how important it is to bring energy and passion into sustainable development work. They left the session feeling inspired to infuse a bit more joy and creativity into their own public health projects

Then, it was time to get hands-on again! This time with suturing! The interns practiced the basics of stitching up wounds, an essential skill for any clinician. There were a lot of focused faces, steady hands, and a few proud moments as they mastered their first stitches. Some of them came out of the room feeling very confident in their wound care abilities, and some of them said they definitely want to practice a few more times before they apply their skills on real skin.
