As the first day of the internship transitioned into the evening, interns engaged in immersive experiences that combined scientific skill-building, research development, and career exploration. Each session deepened their understanding of neuroscience while sparking new ideas and aspirations.

Sheep Brain Dissections

Led by Dr. Khan, interns performed sheep brain dissections in small groups. This hands-on activity allowed students to explore brain structure in a tactile, engaging way, reinforcing the anatomical knowledge gained earlier in the day. The session also introduced key dissection techniques commonly used in neuroscience labs, offering practical experience in identifying regions of the brain and understanding their functions.

Research Brainstorming Sessions

Later in the evening, each intern group met with Dr. Shook and Dr. Wurzman to begin developing their research proposals. These small-group sessions provided a valuable opportunity to think through potential research questions, assess feasibility, and receive direct feedback from experienced mentors. With guidance on hypothesis development and ethical considerations, interns began the foundational work that will shape their projects over the coming weeks.

Lived Experiences Panel

To close the evening, interns participated in a Lived Experiences Panel featuring Dr. Michael Okun and Captain Rick Schena, who shared their unique perspectives on working in neurology, focusing on movement disorders and deep brain stimulation. Captain Schena, who has Parkinson’s disease and was formerly a pilot, inspired interns with his story of perseverance and determination despite challenges. This candid conversation provided a great opportunity for interns to ask questions and gain real-life insights into both the clinical and personal sides of neurological care.

Conclusion

Monday evening provided interns with a rich blend of practical learning, creative thinking, and personal connection to the field of neuroscience. From hands-on dissection to collaborative research planning and inspiring stories from seasoned professionals, the day’s activities set a strong foundation for the weeks ahead. Interns left motivated and equipped with new knowledge, skills, and a deeper appreciation for the diverse paths within neurological science and care.
