As the interns awoke in their new home for the week, they were greeted by an amazing array of various breakfast foods to help fuel their bodies and minds for the days ahead. With a wide selection of cereals, bagels, spreads, and juices, the interns carefully chose their breakfast for the morning in preparation for their big day ahead.
To begin their day, interns work with Brandi Harden as they receive introductions to the case they will be working on closely throughout the week. After meeting with Brandi, the interns meet Heather Picknicky, Brandi’s former partner, who now works in the DC Public Defender’s Office. Following this, the interns are broken up into their case groups. During this time, they have the opportunity to work more closely with Brandi as well as hear a lecture from Professor Dave Karpf, where he introduces them to the advocacy side of the legal field.

After lunch, the interns have group work time and then head into lectures. The first is given by Brandi Harden, who discusses how race plays a factor in incarceration and reform rates; following her powerful lecture, the interns switch gears with Judge Adam Hunter, who teaches the interns how to deliver and prepare a cross and direct examination. After lectures, the interns pick up energy with an exciting panel by Courtney Stewart and other formerly incarcerated individuals.

To wrap up the day, the interns indulge in a hot lunch and fun Georgetown Exploration, where they explore the shops and treats of Georgetown. After an evening of fun, the interns head back to the dorms to unwind and get ready for the new day ahead.
