From Brainstorm to Blueprint: Interns Unite to Design Life-Changing Proposals

When interns weren't in the labs mastering hands-on clinical techniques during Skills Day, they were deeply immersed in collaborative group work. 

The Medical & Public Health program is an intensive, one-week journey designed to teach interns how to recognize, diagnose, treat, and prevent four of the most widespread public health challenges in the region: malaria, typhoid, acute respiratory infections, and nutritional anemia. To tackle these issues effectively, each intern is assigned to a specific disease track and a specialized subtopic. Once they mastered the clinical baselines of each illness, the teams gathered to begin brainstorming their community workshops and sustainable public health proposals.

Throughout their lectures so far, a central theme has echoed in every discussion: public health is everywhere. The program directors and doctors continuously reminded the interns that public health is not confined to hospital walls or restricted to medical professionals, it is a collective effort that anyone can champion. With this holistic mindset, the doctors challenged the students to "think outside the box" and push past the surface level, advising them not to simply replicate existing campaigns that were done in the past weeks/years by other interns, but to innovate.

Embracing this challenge, the teams utilized their specific subtopic focuses as the foundational blueprint for their workshops, tailoring their ideas to the unique cultural and structural landscape of the Bauchi community they are serving. 

The room quickly buzzed with collaborative energy, filled with the sounds of new ideas, rapid-fire questions, and intense, creative debates. Our wonderful physicians rotated through the groups, offering real-world insights and relevant examples from Bauchi, approving early concepts, and guiding the interns through the complex logistics of building an impactful, actionable healthcare initiative from scratch.
