This afternoon, the interns had the chance to hear from Dena Hasan, a public health expert whose career path shows just how many directions this field can take you. Dena shared how she originally planned to work in health law but found her true passion in health management and community health. She spoke about the initiatives she’s led through DC’s Department of Human Services and encouraged the interns to think creatively about the different ways they can serve communities through public health.

Next, the interns met with Deputy Fire Chief Mitch Kannry from the District of Columbia Fire and Emergency Medical Services. Chief Kannry didn’t hold back; he gave them an honest, powerful look at what it’s like to work in Emergency Services. He talked about the tough calls, the heartbreaking moments, and the pride that comes from serving people on some of the hardest days of their lives. His stories reminded everyone that even in the face of pain, this work can make an extraordinary impact.

The interns squeezed in a few more hours of teamwork, polishing up their final workshop pitches and diagnosis practice. They also learned about our International Internship Program (IIP), giving them a glimpse at what might come next if they want to keep exploring health and development work with us beyond this week.
With everything they’ve learned and prepared, the interns headed to bed tonight dreaming of success! They’re ready to diagnose a real patient tomorrow and present their big ideas for improving community health. We can’t wait to see them shine!
