After a morning focused on the legislative side of criminal justice reform, interns spent the afternoon exploring the judicial system through hands-on learning and conversations with experienced advocates.

The afternoon began with an interactive mock trial, where interns analyzed fictional case files, questioned witnesses, evaluated evidence, and presented legal arguments. The exercise challenged participants to think critically, investigate thoroughly, and appreciate the complexities of courtroom advocacy.

Interns then heard from Eddie Ellis, a nationally recognized justice reform advocate and formerly incarcerated leader, and Crystal Carpenter of the Center for Successful Youth (CFSY). Through their personal and professional experiences, they highlighted the realities of incarceration, reentry, and the importance of rehabilitation, encouraging interns to view justice through a more compassionate and informed perspective.

The afternoon continued with a presentation from Kristin McGough, who shared insights from more than 15 years of experience in civil rights litigation, criminal defense, and criminal legal system reform. She discussed the role attorneys play in advancing justice and protecting constitutional rights through impactful legal advocacy.

The day concluded with a powerful panel featuring individuals who were released through the Incarceration Reduction Amendment Act (IRAA). Sharing their personal journeys of growth, rehabilitation, and reentry, the panelists offered interns an inspiring firsthand perspective on the transformative impact of second-chance legislation. Their stories reinforced the importance of compassionate advocacy and reminded interns that behind every case file is a person whose future can be changed through the work they are doing.

By the end of the afternoon, interns had gained a deeper understanding of the judicial system through both practical experience and powerful personal stories.
