A Day of New Beginnings: Kicking Off the AI & Medical Innovation Internship

The AI & Medical Innovation Internship officially began on Sunday as interns arrived and checked into their dorms. After getting settled into their rooms, students had the opportunity to meet their peers and prepare for an exciting week of learning, innovation, and collaboration. The program began with a keynote from Marshall Bailley, who introduced the expectations and goals for the week ahead. His presentation helped interns understand what they could expect from the program and emphasized the importance of being engaged, curious, and prepared to work together throughout the week.

After the opening session, interns gathered for pizza dinner, giving everyone a chance to relax and connect before the evening continued. Following dinner, the group heard from Dr. Daniel Spar, who delivered a keynote address on “The Future of AI and Responsible Innovation.” The discussion introduced interns to the rapidly changing role of artificial intelligence and the importance of considering how new technologies should be developed and used responsibly. As interns prepare to explore the intersection of AI and medicine, the keynote provided an important foundation for thinking about both the possibilities and responsibilities that come with innovation.

Following the keynote, interns met briefly with their teams and Team Leads for introductions. This gave students the opportunity to learn who they would be working with throughout the week and begin becoming familiar with their teammates. These quick introductions helped set the stage for the collaboration and teamwork that would be an important part of the internship.

To end the first day, the interns left campus to visit some of Washington, D.C.’s most iconic monuments. The group went to the World War II Memorial and the Lincoln Memorial, giving students the opportunity to explore together and take in the history surrounding them. After a full day of check-in, keynotes, introductions, and exploration, the interns returned with excitement for the week of AI and medical innovation ahead.
